Not many people know this, but before Punxsutawney Phil was born, there was another groundhog that was tasked with predicting the weather on February 2nd of each year. As a matter of fact, there have been five groundhogs, dating back hundreds of years, who have come before Punxsutawney Phil.

In honor of Groundhogs day tomorrow, let’s have a look at the groundhogs that paved the way for Phil.

1. Tallahassee Tom

Tom was the groundhog that we looked to for weather predictions right before Phil. Tallahassee Tom was an addict, to put it simply. His vices were Jack Daniels, American Spirits, and sports betting, amongst other things. He saw his shadow 70% of the time when he was drinking and only 20% of the time when he gave up the juice. Cause of death: fell into a dumpster and couldn’t scurry out.

2. Corpus Christi Christine

Christine was a real piece of work, too. The Texas native actually lived in a zoo for her entire life, so she never got to experience life as a groundhog in the outside world. As a result, she got overfed and died from obesity-related illnesses pretty early into her weather-predicting tenure.
