Despite the fact that I graduated with a bachelors degree in science, I still am an incredibly superstitious person, despite the lack of evidence to backup some of my strange habits. As a lifelong baseball player, it was hard not to be at least a little bit superstitious, considering the fact that the sport involves so much failure, but I really leaned into it over the years. For example, if I had a particularly good game, I would often eat the same pre-game meal before the following game, or perhaps I’d wear the same lucky socks or underwear in back-to-back games. Cleanliness always took a backseat behind appeasing the Baseball Gods.
Slowly, though, these tendencies crept their way from the baseball diamond into my regular life. For example, I don’t remember how the tradition started, but every time I would take a return flight to New York, I’d listen to Empire State Of Mind by JAY-Z and Alicia Keys right before the plane would land. And call me crazy, but it worked like a fucking charm! In fact, there is a 100% success rate between me playing that song and the airplane landing safely! You’re welcome, fellow passengers.
Another time, during my senior year of high school, I was given a bracelet by a fake Buddhist monk who would patrol the big New York City tourist attractions looking for vulnerable teens whom he could coerce into a donating in exchange for a cheap knickknack. The bracelet, which I did wind up giving a donation for, was completely cursed. By the end of the year, in fact, I had lost a grandparent and my relationship had been ruined, all because of that seemingly innocuous bracelet. After I finally realized that the bracelet that was causing my misfortune, I burned it.
So yeah, I guess you could say that I’m superstitious.
